Stick Man

Stick Man (2007) is Tony Levin’s sixth solo album, a 17-track collection that highlights his mastery of the Chapman Stick, electric bass, and NS Upright bass. Released on September 25 through Lazy Bones Recordings, the album runs just under an hour and blends elements of progressive rock, progressive metal, and ambient textures.

While largely instrumental, three tracks—Welcome, Slow Glide, and Rivers of Light—feature vocals from Tony himself. The record also includes contributions from longtime King Crimson bandmate Pat Mastelotto, who adds drums to eleven tracks, as well as producer Scott Schorr, who provided drums, keyboards, and percussion on seven. Additional guests include guitarist Chris Albers and drummer Tim Dow.

The music spans driving, Crimson-esque grooves (Gut String Theory, Orange Alert, Sticky Fingers) to atmospheric and lyrical explorations (Dark Blues, Rivers of Light). Critics praised the album both for its technical brilliance and its willingness to embrace mood and melody, making Stick Man a standout entry in Levin’s discography.
