Resonator (2006) marked a bold new direction in Tony Levin’s solo work. Unlike his earlier albums, which were primarily instrumental, Resonator introduced lead vocals on most tracks and leaned into a more rock-driven sound.
The record reimagines “Utopia,” first heard as an instrumental on Waters of Eden, now expanded with lyrics and a soaring guitar solo by Steve Lukather of Toto. Another standout, “Throw the God a Bone,” features guest guitarist and vocalist Adrian Belew, making it the first studio collaboration between Levin and Belew since King Crimson’s THRAK sessions in 1995.
Across the album, Tony’s multifaceted musicianship shines—handling lead vocals, bass, Chapman Stick, cello, piano, and keyboards—supported by longtime collaborators Jerry Marotta (drums, vocals), Larry Fast (synthesizers), Jesse Gress (guitar, vocals), and Tony’s brother Pete Levin (piano, organ).
The result is a dynamic, adventurous record that balances powerful rock energy with the inventive spirit that has defined Levin’s career.
