Liquid Tension Experiment 3

Liquid Tension Experiment 3 (2021) marked the long-awaited return of the instrumental progressive metal supergroup Liquid Tension Experiment—Tony Levin on bass and Chapman Stick, joined by John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, and Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater. Arriving more than two decades after Liquid Tension Experiment 2 (1999), the album reignited the band’s signature mix of virtuosity, power, and spontaneity.

The album features eight tracks that balance technical precision with improvisational fire, including two intimate duets, a free-flowing jam, and a meticulously crafted cover. A bonus disc offers nearly an hour of extended improvisations, highlighting the group’s chemistry and fearless creativity.

Released in multiple formats—digital, CD, LP, and Blu-ray—the record was also available in special artbook and deluxe box set editions. Ahead of its release, the band unveiled videos for three tracks: The Passage of Time (their first new composition in 22 years), Beating the Odds, and Hypersonic, each underscoring the group’s explosive return to form.
