    Crimson Chronicles - Volume 1 the 80s

A rock band is many things; a family, a fraternity, a team, a playgroup (a supervised gathering, that is, of pre-schoolers.) It is also a business, an ensemble, a study group, and maybe a therapy group gone bad.

King Crimson is a band that makes its own music, well removed from the tides and currents of other groups. But often Crimson finds itself, when rehearsing or traveling, inside the usual parameters of a rock band. The visual record of the band presented here aims to illuminate both the similarities and the differences - and to share the experience.

In a previous photo book I featured the grittiness of backstage life, using snapshots and avoiding photos I'd taken in locations we visited. Now, hoping to give more texture to the portrait, I've included some shots of where we were, touching on the connection between our lives and our performance.

That earlier book had many shots of audiences. Fewer are included here, but the dedication remains the same; to the fans of King Crimson, whose devotion and patronage though the years has enabled the band, and each of it's players, to do our best to stretch musical imaginations.
